Our track of the week this time came right in from our friends at Armada: “Not giving up on love” is the latest spell by Armin van Buuren and features vocals by Sophie Ellis- Bextor. If you’re thinking of trance being the classic floorish track with soulfoul female vocals this is probably the purified essence. The track is taken from Armin’s forthcoming album and comes – as you’d expect – with a serious remix package. Mischa Daniels is doing a more progressive approach here but still carrying on the spirit. We’ve a small “making of video” for you, “Not giving up on love” is the peak in evolution of classic trance in 2010! (Rating: 4/5)
Our special alternative “tune” of the week is not exactly a tune, but a complete album. “She makes war” is the solo project of Laura Kidd, who used to sing for the already featured mashpop collective “The Young Punx”.
After creating over 40 demos in the past years, she finally got to the studio to record the best 13 of them for the album called “Disarm”. It is not exactly the electronic music style we use to feature usually, but we like the personality behind it and also the pure true sound very much.

On a more sober sidenote we’d like to point out that this release shows how distribution by an indie artist (i.e. without a labels promo power) can look like in the digital age. The “pay what you think it’s worth” approach for the digital package of “Disarm” is clearly appealing as you technically could match any “iTunes” like price point. The download still is far more than just 13 MP3s – you can choose your preferred format, it includes a video greeting, artwork and more bonus stuff that go beyond “ripping from bandcamp”. The whole process is also stunningly easy, payment by PayPal, no personal data required, direct download. That’s what people love. The physical packages are pricy but match a collector’s willingness to spend, we especially liked the “hand packed with love” note. The form of distribution chosen by Laura here very likely won’t work for a Katy Perry or Rihanna but still shows how the net may serve as a major source of distribution for less known but creative artists. Majors, take a look at that!

Our tune of the week: Here is one for all you dubstep lovers: Skream & Benga are releasing more and more high quality tunes under their alter-ego “Magnetic Man”. With “I need air” they landed a massive hit, combining filtered vocals, light dubstep backings and carrying some straight festival atmosphere! We don’t like the remixes too much but the original is a true banger! (Rating: 4/5)
Already having several cutting edge DJs and producers on the show already we’re glad having another marvel next Friday: Trance superstars Aly & Fila will be rocking soundwerk airwaves with an awesome melodic guestmix! The Egyptian duo known for their productions and their own show Future Sound of Egypt is currently #22 on DJmag’s TOP 100 and had a previous “tune of the week” with soundwerk last week. Our tune of the week is from epic Chicane who created a new chapter in EDM with “Saltwater”. Today they are hitting again with “Come Back”, an emotional, well known & catchy tune that combines great vocal parts, sawy synth interpretations and a straight build. Release features superb remixes by Sidney Samson (NL house is hip right now!), Riley & Durand + others. Check them all! The video by the way was not a script – the creator made this to convince his ex girlfriend to return and yes she did! ♥ Rating 4/5.
